Actually, Rusty is an artist on stage. In a class by himself. Want to know why I say that, buy his Pose Like A Pro DVD!! Highly recommended and a must for any competitor's DVD collection.
Outside of Rusty, Darrem and Marvelous Melvin are skilled. And like Lance Johnson's stage presentation.
Among former competitors, Robby Robinso and John DeFendis were very good.

Rusty is in a class by himself, and I know first hand. I have had first hand coaching from Rusty himself! Let me tell you it is intense! I'm no slouch when it comes to posing, but when Rusty put me through the paces Uh... lets just say it was B-R-U-T-A-L! A workout unto itself. I've known Rusty for years, and seen him compete way back since his Mr.Tucson days, and he was always great on the posing dias! As far as Melvin Anthony in my opinion, he is a great bodybuilder an can hit some shots, but I simply cannot stand the dance stuff. Sure it's entertaining, but this is bodybuilding not dance competition. Ed Corney looked like art in motion, and so does Rusty... But opinions are just that opinions! Oh, Yeah Robbie Robinson was awesome! Does anybody remember "Russ Testo" ? He had a reputation as a good poser, but I never seen him in a show.

Rusty is definitely my first choice - a class act. He poses his outstanding muscularity so brilliantly! Crom, thanks for sharing that posing 'workout' with Rusty. I'm sure it was brutal, but you are lucky to have had the opportunity. Yes, I remember Russ Testo, a great physique artist. Here's a link: www.russtesto.com/index.phpRobby Robinson and Frank Zane were also great posers.

Iron58, Thanks for the link! I think the thing that sets Rusty apart from the pack is that he treats posing as a craft unto itself. A lot of bodybuilders just go through the motions, and only hit mandatories forgetting that on stage the body is seen from all angles. I always thought Rusty should have a seminar on posing/stage presentation. Anybody who would attend would not only benefit from it (competitor/or not), but be quite entertained. Rusty has a unique spin on the bodybuilding game, and can take the mundane task of the "mandatories" quite interesting! To be honest anybody out there interested in exercise, diet, bodybuilding, posing, and physical culture in general could greatly benefit from this forum. The handful of local competitions I have done, I was always in the top 5 if not winning my class. I've known Rusty since I was a teen, and his knowledge was always a factor to my success! I remember Rusty writing on a photo "Success doesn't always come to the stronger or smarter man, but to the one who truely believes he can!" Those are words to live by. Iron58 thanks for the great post! Keep a postin'!!!

Great post, crom. Rusty is amazing. And true, a good posing practice session should be a workout unto itself. i tell whoever i work with that if you're not tired and perspired, you weren't intense enough!
Good luck in your future shows.

I definitely agree Crom, Rusty does indeed treat posing as a craft unto itself. And, it sounds like you do as well. I remember a quote from Serge Nubret: "Bodybuilding is an Art and we must sculpt our body in such a fashion that it becomes a masterpiece." And, I would add posing that living sculpture is what truly distinguishes Rusty as a class act. Congratulations on your previous competitions and good luck in the future.

Iron58, Thanks for the compliment. If I can keep my lazy arse in the gym I might just do a little show out here in AZ next year! In The book "Pumping Iron" Arnold, Zane, Corney, and more actually get on a platform in an art gallery, and get viewed as art! If you watch the special features on the "Pumping Iron" DVD it shows a little bit of that event. Just like you said "Living sculpture". Yeah, Serge Nubret was awesome, and thats a great quote!

Francy here,,,I need to get my own avatar, but until I do, I'm using Rustys!!!
Very cool posts crom!! I remember back in the day, when you were but a wee lad...just kidding....I never did, put it on DVD, but I should tho-I'm gonna scan in the article he just had 2 pages in the Ironman "Australia version"...I thought they were all the same, but I guess they're different throughout the world...in Australia the women compete in "figure building" kinda sad, lots of skinny girls doing early 80's posing in the giant stripper heels...kinda..I don't know, looked like I stepped back in time.
For those of you who remember, womens bodybuilding was transformed the day that Carla Dunlap walked out onstage, kicked off her heels and started hitting "mens poses" Every women cheered and hey, they were freed of the shackles of acting like displayed hood ornaments at mens shows....Rachel McLish reigned supreme and everyone wanted to look like her and any of the other pros, they had character, they had beauty and poise. It evolved to a very cool status in the mid to late 90's, then it just when HARD CORE. Most if not all of the women had nudie websites and I and most of the general public kinda took one last breath and sighed...Womens figure evolved to where it eclipses mens shows and is included with pro mens events, (no women bodybuilders need apply), and now the womens pro figure looks like women pros in the late 80's. So to see the "figure building" contest photos in that Australian mag was like we regressed back to the late 70's look. (not good) How did I get onto this rant?? I was looking at the pics of the Australian Ironman and then to the US Ironman and the difference was really......shocking. Different world, different attidude. Mens bodybuilding just morphs into who can pack on the most muscle, no matter how bad/good it looks, the one who had no business in the top 5 always gets there, and one in the bottom 15 or so should have been in the top 10...Going by todays standards, I just pick the most bloated, yet shredded, unsymmetrical physique and I give it a check mark off the top 10, but the judges give them a top 5. Different world, different attitude. I used to love this sport, but now that I can look from the outside looking in, yet on the inside looking around, it just doesn't have the same excitement...I remember walking around backstage at local and regional events and everyone kind of knew who would win because they were the largest, leanest, most symmetrical and stood the hell out. But because it's not judged by rules we grew up with...(not by any standards that have anything to do with the sport, anway) It lost its appeal and excitement. That kind of sucked. Then we said one more try, and Rusty turned pro and it hasn't been a bad thing, just not as as much fun as I would have thought. He hasn't gotten much publicity, but hey, any blond with huge boobs can get a muscle cover....hey crom, you know me...I'm just saying what everyone else is thinking...Rusty just read over my shoulder and said GEEEEZZZZZ, take a chill pill!!!
He's (I mean WE) are going to do the Ironman Pro in February and let's just see what happens.....but I already KNOW what will happen....he'll look unbelievable,,,,,symmetrical as HELL....put on a magnificent show and look better than anyone else. Maybe I'm a little jaded, ya think?

Ahh... I remember first seeing you two back at SPARR's Gym! Back when this town actually had a scene, and there were plenty of local shows to aspire to! Now theres nothin down here! Kids in the gym all think they're cage fighters. Bodybuilding has changed so much, the so-called gyms are full, but not many bodybuilders. Crazy! I do believe everything goes in cycles, and in time it will come around. (I hope). I sometimes think about writing a book on the crazy scene that was once down here. Some of the stuff that used to go down, was nuts! I was lucky to have caught it, before it faded away. It was HARDCORE! Get your avatar up! For those who know Francy, she always pulls no punches! Francy and Rusty are two people I've always held in high regard. 'Nuff said!
