Hey! Just signed on with Rusty's new website! My name's Rod Labbe, and I write for all the top Bodybuilding mags. In 2001, it was my pleasure to connect with Rusty, and we produced a kickass interview for MuscleMag (published in late 2002). Remember "Slugging it out?" Since then, I've been working on another Rusty project, and you guys can expect some big news within the next month of two. Not even Rusty knows this yet (hee-hee!).
Working with Rusty was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had. Not only is the guy completely personable and down to earth, he's friendly, laidback, and dependable. Believe me, he's one in a million! Our interview took more than a year to complete and polish up, but in the end, we were both blown away. Plus, the layout MuscleMag did was frickin' incredible!
This next project is gonna be just as good, and if things work out as planned, Rusty will have a COVER! Yep! But keep it on the DL for now, guys...!
I'll be dropping by again, so hang tight. And hey, Rusty! What's up, big bro?

Bro! What issue of MuscleMag was your new article in? I didn't see it! AAAaargh!
I still have our original interview and could post it somewhere on your site. Heck, I could even post it here. Let me know.
As for our newest collaboration, I've got something in the fire that just might blow your mind. Don't want to say anything yet, but it should all be solidified within the next two-three months. And best of all, we don't need Colt's permission! ;D
Your site looks good, dude. If you need my help for anything--writing-wise--feel free. Hey, did you hear that Rory Leidelmeyer's making a comeback?
Rod
PS: I'm working on a new novel and revising the first! ;D

No, that's the name of the interview Rusty and I did. Isn't there a newer one?
The next article isn't a Q and A type interview; it's something completely different. And if I can pull enough strings, a cover shot of our favorite Bodybuilder might just be a possibility.
Incidentally, I just sold a big interview I did with Heavyweight Andy Bick to Mens Workout magazine. You might know Andy by his more famous name, Zeb Atlas. It's gonna be a cover story!

Cool, Congratulations, I don't know himn by Andy or Zeb, but I'm sure there are several people here who will...
I'm in Musclemag Sept. 2006 page 252-253. Very cool...so far Lee Priest and Flex Wheeler have written complimentary things about me in a couple other mags/articles which definintely made my week!

Hey Rusty, What are the pages in Musclemag Sept 2006 about? Is it an article about you or just a few training tips like what published in Flex?

It actually was a pretty good article for me, pretty pointed, but factual and tells it exactly how it was, it was on how I felt from the Masters Pro World, and a pic of Francys or SoCal photog, not sure whos it was, they were both snapping shots at the time...

Looks like a good article from 2004 issue....."Warming Up to prevent rotator cuff injuries"... I really never warm up but I usually do about 20minutes of cardio before lifting. By the time I'm done, I feel warmed up. Tried going to the members area but I still have not received authorization (from Rob?)

ChestnArms,
After warming up with cardio, use a rubber band cable to do all shoulder/chest stretches. With hands on handles, step onto the center of the rubber band. Simulate front raises, lateral raises, rear flyes, slowly, and 20 reps of each. Then attach the handle on one end to a bench press and do side laterals and curls. Warm up every joint in your arm, if you don't you'll be the guy with his nose pressed against the glass window of the gym with your arm in a sling!!!!

Rusty, I'll definitely post the interview today, sometime this afternoon.
Before I do that, I think your fans should know what you're like in person and what it's like to work with you. Got your seatbelt on, bro? It's gonna be a bumpy ride! (Just kiddin'!)
Anyway, here's how Rusty and I connected. I've been a freelance writer for almost twenty years, concentrating mostly in the fitness field (though not exclusively). In 2001, I began reading quite a bit about someone named "Carl Hardwick." Who is this Hardwick fellow, I wondered? The first photo I saw was on a site devoted to "muscle with moustaches," or something like that. I realized then and there that Carl had what it took to sell an article. Not only did he have a great "look," there was something in his face that told me this guy liked to laugh, had a great sense of humor, and wanted everybody to be in on the joke. But how to contact him?
Then, doing research, I learned Carl Hardwick was a fantasy man. In REAL life, his name was Rusty Jeffers, he was a competitive Heavyweight Bodybuilder, and owner of one of the most aesthetically put-together physiques in the sport. But still no contact info! Though there were plenty of pix on the web, Rusty didn't have a website. And the stuff I found on Carl never had contact info. Not even on the Colt Studios site. And after perusing page after page of Carl and his furry muscles, I came to another conclusion: Carl was not only a fantasy figure, he defined the ultimate Colt Man! Still does, as far as I'm concerned.
Alas, ultimate Colt Men are unreachable--their contact info locked tighter than the gold at Fort Knox. So, I reluctantly went on to other writing projects. But I knew that some day, some way, I'd get to write about Mr. Jeffers. Only a matter of time.
Well, in 2001, Colt put up a website for Carl. It was, more or less, designed to sell Carl product--but it was also obvious to me that Rusty had a hand in its creation. There were personal pix of him posing in his back yard, and they were definitely not "Carl poses." There was an actual e-mail address (a first!), and I dropped him a message and introduced myself. Of course, I realized this e-mail address probably generated mail at a blinding speed, but what the hey. It was worth a shot, right? Within seconds, I received a "form letter" response, something like "Dear fan. Thanks for your comments. I'm sorry, but I'm just too busy to respond personally. But I appreciate your interest in my career. Thanks, Carl."
Oookay. So much for trying to reach Rusty.
Then, something odd happened. Approximately two weeks later, another e-mail came through, bearing an address I didn't recognize. Who should it be but the dude himself, Rusty Jeffers! He'd actually received the Colt e-mail (forwarded to him), and yes, he'd love to work with me!
So, it began. We initially did the interview via e-mail, which took almost a year to complete and polish up to both our satisfaction. Then, off it went on to MuscleMag. There was some hoopla with the Colt photo support, but that hurdle was soon overcome, and the article came out in November 2002. I was very, very pleased with the outcome, but my name had inexplicably been removed from the writing credits (an uneasy situation that took a while to resolve). Nonetheless, both Rusty and I were pleased as punch.
Since then, I've been trying to get another article on the man underway. It's been slow going, because I've been literally swamped with assignments. But now, in 2006, I've finally found a good place for the second article, and it'll probably generate Rusty's very first cover shot! Not too many details available right now, but as soon as I know for sure, you guys will be the first to know.
What's Rusty like in person? Well, he's serious, dedicated, likes to laugh, has a wry sense of humor, and looks at life philosophically. He's also a devoted family man, someone who never quits, and one of the most personable individuals I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Is he far removed from his Carl persona? No, not really. Carl is Rusty, and Rusty is Carl. Believe me, if there's one thing Rusty knows how to do, it's pose--he's very camera-friendly! Mike Mentzer and Zane are obvious inspirations, but there's Rusty in there, too. Yep, the guy is one in a million, and I consider myself fortunate to know him.
Watch for "Rusty Jeffers, Slugging it Out" later today!
Rod
